State of Play has been creating hand crafted masks since 2010 for schools, colleges, universities, youth theatres, workshop practitioners and theatres in both the UK and abroad.
State of Play’s half-masks are expressive and playful. They are incredible tools for developing and understanding action and play, and can help students become stronger, more confident, physical performers.
All our masks are individually hand crafted and painted, finished to a professional performance level standard, allowing them to transition seamlessly from the classroom to the stage. Ideal for student and professional use, the masks are made of highly durable neoprene – which is tough, lightweight and easily cleaned. The semi-rigid nature of neoprene creates a mask that replicates the weight, pliability and texture of a leather mask, rather than the feel of brittle plastic.
Our half-mask set allows students to explore the silent physical play of mask before then being able to discover and explore the voice of the mask and text. Our masks do not have a fixed expression or character, allowing for the broadest possible range of play.
State of Play’s masks can be purchased as part of a 10 mask set or individually.

After our half-mask productions Conversations Not Fit for the American Dinner Table, The Unholy Trinity and our work constructing the masks for York Theatre Royal’s My Family and Other Animals we’ve had numerous enquiries into our masks, and the possibility of custom creations. We are now accepting commissions for mask design, creation or consultation. We’d love to hear your ideas, be they for educational purposes or professional productions. We create full masks, half-masks, larval masks and animal masks – anything really! No project is too small or too large.
If you would like to discuss a commission, please don’t hesitate to contact us
